ARARAT REGIONAL ART GALLERY

Ararat_0327 small

Regional Galleries play such an important role within the gallery system here in Australia, bringing exciting exhibitions, speakers and the opportunity to attend workshops to rural areas. Founded in 1968 I have had the pleasure of regularly visiting the Ararat Regional Art Gallery since about 1980. The focus of the galleries permanent collection is fiber and textiles; and the gallery also houses the largest collection of contemporary tapestry of any regional gallery in Australia. I have seen so many wonderful exhibitions over the years and due to encouragement from former Director Graham Bird, I enrolled all those years ago in the Diploma of Art ‘Tapestry’

Last weekend saw the conclusion to ‘Ararat Basketfest 2012’ with a symposium held on Saturday. A highly successful program running the past two months has seen exhibitions, workshops and guest speakers sharing fascinating insights into contemporary and indigenous basket making in Australia.

Douglas Fuchs ‘FLOATING FOREST’ 30th Anniversary Exhibition, loaned from the collection of the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney was such an interesting exhibition and still very contemporary 30 years after its making. Kevin Murray has written a blog post about the Symposium here.

The Gallery now have a public page on Facebook here, hit the ‘like’ button to get updates, but if you don’t have a Facebook account you can still read the page.

The Gallery also have a blog, become a ‘follower’ to keep up with what is happening at the Gallery.

The Gallery also have an eNEWSLETTER

If you live in Melbourne or Ballarat why not consider taking the train to Ararat for the day and visiting the gallery.

  1. Debbie, I see that Ararat gallery is going to have Annemieke Mein's work on show soon. I will have to check out if they are having much more than we saw recently in Brighton. I have always admired her work and would love to see more.

  2. Hi Mary, the Ararat Gallery showed a large exhibition of Annemieka's work last year. I am not certain that there is to be another exhibition this year? At the moment I am not aware of what exhibitions are planned for the future. Maybe you should check the advertising that you saw to make certain that the dates are correct? I love her work and the exhibition was very popular last year. Debbie.
