WEAVERS REUNION, AUSTRALIAN TAPESTRY WORKSHOP

I have been to Melbourne a few times in the past few months, each time I visited the Australian Tapestry Workshop. Earlier in the year they were busy weaving the 'Avenue of Rememberance' tapestry. Commissioned for the Australian War Memorial, to be hung on the Centenary of the First World War. Commissioned by a generous donation from the Geoff and Helen Handbury Foundation. Designed by Imants Tillers and inspired by Sir Keith Murdoch' famous Gallipoli Letter You can see more on the making of this stunning tapestry here.
Last Friday I was invited to a weavers reunion for students who had participated in classes run by the ATW in recent years. This is one of the tapestries that was on display. 'Everything has two witnesses, one on earth and one in the sky' Designed by Sangetta Sandrasegar.
Woven by Sue Batten, the weaver has used soumak to add texture to the design.
Beautiful soft colours in the bottom part of the design.
It was a nice small get together of past students and teachers. The world of tapestry in Australia is quite small and it is wonderful to catch up with other tapestry weavers for a show and tell.
