Portraits of Silence: The Art of André Sollier

Portraits of Silence: The Art of André Sollier from The Silent City on Vimeo.
We are all suffering a heatwave in southern Australia that is expected to last the week. It was around 115 F in the courtyard a couple of days ago and that is not out in the sun! There is not much that you can do when it is that damm hot. You may as well give in, turn on the air conditioning and read a book or watch a movie. I watched my copy of  ' Portraits of Silence: The Art of André Sollier' thinking about how sumie, Japanese brush painting could translate into tapestry. I have a brush and ink drawing that will be my next tapestry. After a search on the net I found that the entire documentary had been uploaded. Sadly, Andre passed away in 2007, a couple of years after I visited his home and dojo.  Andre taught sumi-e painting in Melbourne for over thirty years and estimated that he had taught over five thousand students. Quiet warm and humble, with a wonderful French accent you can't not be drawn into the quiet beauty of Andre's paintings.

  1. I did a class with Sollier a long time ago in Melbourne. Still have my ink block somewhere.
Lovely shakuhachi music in the background of the clip. Thanks for posting it.

  2. HI Misha, It is a wonderful documentary. Andre was an amazing man, lucky you for being a student. Maybe you will be inspired to do some sumie? Debbie.
